Cessation Causes Trauma
By Valerie Vanderburg

“The state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes trauma.” This is Random House’s definition of addiction, as published in the Random House Unabridged Dictionary © Random House, Inc. 2006. Let’s focus on the last three words of that definition – “cessation causes trauma.” Talk about trying to choose the lesser of two evils! Do you continue abusing your body with drugs and alcohol or deprive your body of those substances, causing both physical and psychological trauma. The difference between the two, however, is that one is prolonged and will eventually lead to the deterioration of the body and organ failure; the other is temporary and, if accompanied by a quality addiction treatment program, completely recoverable.
We at Cliffside Malibu feel it is important for those addicted to drugs and/or alcohol as well as their family and loved ones to understand both the physiological and the psychological components of addiction. Addiction is as much a chemical dependency as it is an emotional one. That is why no one can simply decide to give up the bad habits and live a drug-free live without the assistance of drug rehab program. Admitting you have a problem and deciding you want to free yourself of addiction are the first two steps in a series of many. Seeking the right drug rehabilitation facility for you comes next.
Cliffside Malibu is a facility offering drug and alcohol rehab and we take a holistic approach to addiction recovery, meaning that we work on healing the mind and soul, as well as the body. Therefore, our staff is made up of much more than doctors, nurses, and counselors.
